American Geriatrics Society: Those Sleeping Longer Than 8 Hours Should Be Monitored For Dementia

FACTS: Individuals at an older age that sleep longer than 8 hours a day have been shown to be at a higher risk of dementia, according to a study by the American Geriatrics Society. Of the 1,982 patients monitored in the recent 4-year study, 97 of them were diagnosed with dementia. Those who had slept more than 8 hours a night and went to bed before 9 p.m. showed the greatest risk.

QUOTE: The authors of the journal mention, ”This suggests that cognitive function should be monitored in older adults who report prolonged time in bed and advanced sleep timing,”
