FACTS: A research team from the University of Rostock suggests that our planetary neighbors Uranus and Neptune rain diamonds within their respective stratospheres. Flashing lasers at a thin piece of PET plastic (found in water bottles) was used to replicate the interiors of these celestial bodies, which consequently created nanodiamonds during the exercise.
QUOTES: Dominik Kraus, a physicist at HZDR and professor at University of Rocstock, “PET has a good balance between carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen to simulate the activity in ice planets. Up to now, we used hydrocarbon films for these kinds of experiments and we discovered that this extreme pressure produced tiny diamonds, known as nanodiamonds.”
